Total Recall

چکیده
T oday, human-computer interfaces (HCIs) are rather physical in nature. The communication of information from and to computers is limited to the capabilities of individual input and output devices. With a typing speed of less than 50 words per minute and a reading rate of less than 300 words per minute, my transmission rate to and from my laptop is far lower than the communication bandwidth of most computer-to-computer interfaces. Advanced HCI approaches, such as speech recognition, are clearly widening this communication bottleneck. A direct link to the brain, however, would avoid most physiological activities. Ignoring all the required processing tasks for a moment, in the future we might end up at the speed of thinking when communicating with computers. In addition to a more efficient way of communication, such brain-computer interfaces will introduce completely new possibilities. For instance, they will support people with physical disabilities so that they can control prostheses and other interfaces mentally. BCIs also offer promising new approaches in neurological rehabilitation and even computer games. Futurists predict that, by the mid-21st century, it will be possible to download human brain content onto a supercomputer. Replicating and changing consciousness can be implied from such capabilities—total recall becomes reality. BCI technology is truly both an exciting and challenging topic. On the way to digital immortality and mental control, there are still many hurdles to overcome. How can brain signals be sensed both noninvasively and efficiently? How can researchers process and interpret these signals? In the five articles in this special issue, leading scientists shed some light on the state of the art in brain-computer interfaces.

Evaluating Recall and Reflection Journals Written by Pre-Service Teachers in EFL Practicum Courses
In view of the fact that pre-service teachers’ critical reflection through evaluating teaching activity of their peers is an important part of practicum activity, the current study aimed to analyze the recall and reflection journals written by pre-service teachers to identify and evaluate the discoursal features of their journals. To this end, a total of 272 recall and reflection journals writ...
متن کاملLarge individual differences in free recall
Using single factor ANOVA I show that there are large individual differences in free recall (η² ranges from 0.09-0.26) including the total recall, the balance between recency and primacy, and the initial recall (subsequent recalls show smaller individual differences). All three memory properties are relatively uncorrelated. The variance in the initial position may be a measure of executive cont...
متن کاملFree Recall Shows Similar Reactivation Behavior as Recognition&Cued Recall
I find that the total retrieval time in word free recall increases linearly with the total number of items recalled. Measured slopes, the time to retrieve an additional item, vary from 1.4-4.5 seconds per item depending upon presentation rate, subject age and whether there is a delay after list presentation or not. These times to retrieve an additional item obey a second linear relationship as ...
متن کاملWHU at TREC Total Recall Track 2015
This paper describes the WHU IRLAB participation to the Total Recall Track in TREC 2015. We implement an end-to-end system to deal with the total recall task. We propose an iterative query expansion method, which construct queries using iteratively selected terms. We choose to participate the "Play-at-home" evaluation. Results are presented and discussed.

Some of theories which try to explain the mechanisms underlying false memory phenomenon postulate that false memories are due to existence of semantic relations between studied items which increase memory's vulnerability to this kind of distortion. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of shifting attention away from semantic relations among words in associative lists...
متن کاملScaffolding Comprehension and Recall Gaps: Effects of Paratextual Advance Organizers
Although filling the gap in reading comprehension gained momentum with the rise of the top-down approach, Vygotsky’ concept of scaffolding and the dual code theory provided a strong support for the use of paratext to enhance comprehension. Scaffolding is dependent on other-regulation, one type of which is object-regulation. From this vantage-point, various types of paratext can function as sou...
